Criminal Cases in the Colfax County Courts
Colfax County Court hears misdemeanors, traffic matters, city and village ordinance prosecutions, extraditions, and felony preliminary proceedings. Colfax County District Court, part of the Fifth Judicial District, primarily hears felony trials and related post-judgment work. Nebraska JUSTICE is the statewide trial-court name search. Public information carries a stated 24-hour lag and may show no more than 30 cases. Begin broad because an added middle initial that is absent from the stored name can cause a false no-result. Narrow to Colfax and the court type only after seeing whether the name returns too many matches.

The portal is a finding tool, not a promise that every pleading or image is online. A result list can omit a case beyond the 30-result ceiling. Recent entries can lag. Sealed and confidential material does not become public merely because the system has a detail screen.

Colfax County Felony Preliminary
A County Court felony preliminary is not a felony trial. It is an early stage in which the lower court addresses preliminary matters and whether the felony proceeds. Schuyler, Clarkson, and Howells also have no separate municipal courts. Ordinance cases use County Court. Uniform County Court Rule §6-1457 governs how city and village ordinance material is filed, which is why a city code website is not the criminal case record.
Stages of a Criminal Case
The docket should be read as a timeline. A complaint or information states allegations. Arraignment is the hearing at which the charge is stated and a plea is taken. Motions and settings can change the path. A disposition records the outcome, while sentencing follows a conviction when those events are separate.

Do not treat an initial count as the final count. Prosecutors may decline, amend, add, or reduce charges. A dismissal is not a conviction, an acquittal is a not-guilty result, and a set-aside is later relief with a different legal effect. Missing Colfax County Case Documents
A case result without document images is not necessarily incomplete as a court file. The public portal and the clerk's complete file are different access layers. Call County Court for its public misdemeanor, traffic, ordinance, and preliminary documents. Call District Court for felony pleadings and orders. Give the exact number, party name, and approximate year.
The result detail can contain parties and roles, attorney data, offense rows, judgment, court-cost accounts, financial activity, receipts, and a Register of Actions. A register entry may show the date, event or document description, initiating party or judge, document number, service method, and image ID. Read those fields as docket history. They do not guarantee that the underlying image is public or available online.
Older material may be offline. A newly filed event may still sit inside the portal's 24-hour lag. Confidential attachments, sealed records, juvenile material, and protected identifiers will not be released just because another docket entry refers to them. Ask whether a public redacted version exists and request a written statutory basis if access is denied.
Note: A clerk-certified copy establishes the court record; a portal printout is useful for research but is not the same product.
Access & Restrictions
Nebraska Public Records Law supports inspection and copies of public court records, while specific statutes and court rules protect other material. Neb. Rev. Stat. §84-712.05 permits withholding listed sensitive records. Juvenile adjudications are not adult convictions. Sealed material and private identifiers do not belong in ordinary public results.
When a file mixes public and protected material, ask the clerk for a redacted public copy rather than treating the whole file as closed. A requester may also ask for the statutory basis for withheld material.
A Nebraska set-aside under §29-2264 does not erase the historical case. It adds relief ordered by the sentencing court and nullifies the conviction for specified purposes while preserving certain legal uses. Read the order itself before describing the status.

Colfax County Sentence Is Not Custody
A sentence tells what the court ordered. It does not prove today's physical location. Colfax County operates only a short-term six-person holding cell and contracts with Butler, Platte, and Antelope counties. Call the sheriff for current contract-jail placement. Use NDCS only for sentenced state custody. Check the relevant jail or state locator after the agency identifies the correct system.
